Coming Up:

Ryan and Tanya Smith are moving into a new home… and they need some help painting the interior. Let’s show them the housewarming gift they deserve by gathering an obnoxiously large group to go over and help out. Tanya also said she’d provide food! (I really miss those guys...)
*Sunday, June 10th, 9:40 Life Connection service at Valleydale… Song of Solomon.
Great for singles, couples and everything in between… all about the Lord of life, love and such. (This was a great little video series--I wish we could see it again, now that most of us are married)

The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything
5… Wookiee’s Rent. He’s now an official resident for the next three months, and we love his money! (He paid for one summer. The other was on us)
4… Krista McBroom. See, I didn’t forget you!
3… The fact 25+ people showed up on Friday night for Pearl Harbor. Rock.
2… Stephanie Campbell. Thanks for hosting the Campbell’s Souper Mmm Mmm Good Memorial Day Dinner, surpassed only by…
1… Ken and Lynn Nipp. Lunch every Sunday after church, and this time it was a feast! Thank you so much!
The Spotlight Haiku
June is Deuce History Month… June 10th, as a matter of fact, is our one year anniversary! This is the second in a series of Spotlight Haiku, shining the spotlight on the residents of The Deuce. This week? Tom Johnson gets the light on him. This haiku was written by our own Michael Nipp.
Tom da Preacha Man
Kick, Chop, Punch Karate Fan
He loves critters too
If I Could Be Serious for a Minute
The only thing I am requesting in the space is a request by Shawn… if anyone has a stand alone cd burner, not the computer burner, we could borrow/rent for one day (DeuceFestDeuce, July 7th) we would be so appreciative to talk to you. Contact Shawn at shawngs@bellsouth.net.
This Week’s Top Ten List
Top Ten Ways to Mispronounce Meredith Quintana (This was one of my all time faves...)
10… Meretreal Quebeca

7… Former President Merejohn Quincytana Adams
6… Shawn Sharp
5… Axldith Quinrosa (for you, Drew)
4… The Professor and Meredith Quintana, here on Gilligan’s Isle!

1… Rap Star M. Quiddy (It was Puff Quiddy, then M. Quiddy... now its just Quiddy)
Be A Part
No love for the DW Editors… I got two haiku. I ask for a Dave Dollar haiku and I have two. Depressing. Very depressing.
The First Ever DW Poll is Wrapped Up

The Deuce Weekly, 5/22 - 5/28/01 (Summer Preview!)
5/22-5/28
THE SUMMER PREVIEW ISSUE
In this issue, which is longer than most, so be warned, the editors of DW have decided to give you a preview of all the major events coming up between now and September. Also, we begin our series of Spotlight Haiku on the Deuce members, plus Dave’s Top Ten Summer Predictions. Without ado, I give you the first annual Deuce Weekly Summer Preview… (as I re-read this issue, I laughed numerous times... was this really five years ago??)
Coming Up:
TONIGHT, SOFTBALL AND PROJECT 86…
Tonight at Herdmont Park, Common Ground is playing a wacky game of softball for anyone with any talents whatsoever. Meet at 5:30 at The Deuce to carpool, or come out to the park, off of 119, around 6:15-6:30 to play. More info? Email Sybil@datacrest.com
Also, Project 86, Living Sacrifice and Stavesacre will be in concert at Five Points Music Hall tonight. For more details of times and such, contact Michael at nubjubjr@aol.com
THURSDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY…
Just a reminder, this Thursday at 6:30, our weekly entrance into the presence of God via Sybil’s house. For more details, see the above email.
PEARL HARBOR ON FRIDAY…
The Deuce will be going as a group to see Pearl Harbor this Friday, May 25th, probably to the late show. Don’t be foolish and show up at 9 to get a 9:30 ticket… it will be sold out, I promise. Bring your $7.50 to me during TNBS or this week sometime and I will go during lunch on Friday and get a ticket. Bring the amount needed or be ready to sacrifice 50 cents because I probably wont have change. First come, first serve, and absolutely no “get me a ticket and I will give you money on Friday night”. If you are planning on getting your ticket on Friday on your own, email me that day to find out the time that everyone will be going to…
MIDNIGHT BREAKFAST, FRIDAY, JUNE 8th...
For 2 bucks each from midnight to 1am, come to The Deuce and enjoy the tastes of The Crosby Show and Dave’s Pancakes and Waffles, this time with a much more extensive menu than last. We pulled in 35 people last time… lets shoot for 40! Doors open at 10:30, Coke, water, milk and OJ provided, coffee bar opened at 1am.
WALKABOUT: ON HOLY GROUND DINNER THEATER, JUNE 29th AND 30th
Besides Common Ground, The Deuce and Ashley Judd, my other obsession lies with the middle school drama team I direct. This is the 2nd annual dinner theater that we are putting on, and I hope to see all of you there. Tickets will be about $5 apiece, for dinner. If you only wish to see the show, that will be free! Times TBA.
DEUCEFESTDEUCE… SATURDAY JULY 7th…
Simply the biggest party you will find at Rollingwood on July 7th, I promise you! Our plan is a shrimp and crawfish boil, cooked by the hands of Vic and Ken Nipp. In the Deuce Café we’ll be serving up the coffee and ice cream. Cost is $5.00 per person, cheaper than an afternoon movie, for all you can eat, all you can handle.
In concert… The Mix of DJ Phrenzy… Ashley O’Neal… Justin Glenn… Stephanie Knipp… Dave the Drama Guy.. Drew Morris and Friends… and our newest game, The Deuce Weakest Link, one prize, one winner… now can you dig that? (So, I don't think we played Weakest Link... I can't remember what we did--perhaps Deucenaire again?)
LE PERC at COMMON GROUND, SATURDAY, JULY 14th…
Common Ground takes on a French Café appeal as we hold a great coffeehouse night. Come for music, poetry, song, dance and great food and coffee. Times TBA.
SO LONG STEPH, SATURDAY, AUGUST 4th
Stephanie Knipp is our Deuce First Lady, and we love her so. Sadly, she is leaving us in the fall to go away to school, but we are excited about the new direction God is taking her in. So, make plans to join us at The Deuce as we say goodbye (for now) to our beloved First Lady, the original Deuce Diva. You’ll hear more about this in weeks to come, and in the July 30th DW, the Steph Knipp Edition (this event is soon to be called StephStock, and the DW Stephanie Tribute Issue comes the first week of August)
THE DFC II BEGINS, SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 1st
The DFC? The Deuce Football Championships… before you laugh, just know that the DFC is open to anyone and is a rigorous 15 week season of football pickings and choosings, predictions, surprises and excitement. Anyone outside of the DFC can tell you how obnoxious it was… and anyone inside the DFC can tell you how awesome it was. Shawn Sharp was a wire-to-wire number 1 last season… and he thinks he’ll do it again. Oh, and DeRamus has already issued a challenge to all. (by the way, I'm taking some time to do major work on The DFC blogsite--I really want to put up everything, so watch for that)
Stuff to take note of Coming Soon:
*June 10th, Sunday… Life Connection at Valleydale begins our study on Song of Solomon… great for singles, all about the Lord of life, love and other mysteries. (PoG reference intended)
*June 15th, Friday, Ecclesia Church downtown is hosting Travail in concert.
*June 16th, Saturday… Watermark in concert, Kindred Bookstore
*June 20th-23rd… AtlantaFest in Atlanta, Georgia. Contact Michael for more info.

*December… Jill takes her diploma from Auburn U!
*December 22nd… It’s a Wonderful Deuce Christmas
*February 2002… Deuce Date Party II
*Summer 2002… Matt and Ginger get hitched.
The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything
5… Run DMC. I didn’t go, but I heard enough good things about it to warrant a ranking.
4… Amy Wible’s graduation cake. It looked okay, but it was so freakin’ good to eat.
3… Shrek. Good movie. I personally think Eddie Murphy steals the show.
2… Steph Knipp’s simply groovy new haircut.
1… Silvertron Café. This little café in Clairmont, being led to it by Jimmy, was awesome. They had cheese logs… not cheese sticks, but cheese logs. (I took a date to this place once. It was nice. The owner was recently shot and killed. Very sad)
The Spotlight Haiku
On deck for their own Spotlight Haiku this summer are Osborne, Sarah Hasha, Jodi Nelson, Earl Salser and many more… However, since we are approaching June, the one year anniversary of The Deuce is upon us… so, its fitting that June is declared Deuce History Month! In the next few weeks, we are going to spotlight Tom, Michael, Malcolm, Fisher and The Deuce in a special series of haiku.
This week… The Haiku goes to Shawn, written for us by our friend Leslie Cordell.
Shawn, such a hottie
All women wish to be his,
Yet all get the shaft.
If I Could Be Serious For A Minute…
Hey, if you think about it this week, say a prayer for Ginger in Chile, Matt who’s going to Belize, Ross in California, Rachelle in Russia and Nathan in New Zealand. Pray for safe travel, pray for God’s hand… and though all of these trips aren’t necessarily mission trips, anytime we are around non-Christians, it’s a mission trip. (nothing's changed, really... at least for Matt & Ginger)
This Week’s Top Ten List
Dave’s Top Ten Summer Predictions
10… Dave forgets what he’s doing in June and puts out a top ten list that has no reference whatsoever to the hit motion picture “Black Dog”.
9… Frustrated with trying to get into Samford, Michael Nipp turns to Montevallo… where he doesn’t become a student, he becomes a night professor, teaching the new class “The Films of Will Patton.”
8… The full moon in August causes a strange happening, as in one single evening, Vic passes up free ribs, Sean Hall decides he’s too tired to pray and Drew Morris plays Jewel… for four hours.
7… Common Ground is shocked, though editors at DW weren’t surprised, when Jennifer Pritchett is arrested in August for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Bombing. Apparently her quiet spirit front could only hold off the FBI for so long, as they soon discover her two alias names: Eric Rudolph and Joey Buttafuaco.
6… In June, David Mark Osborne is kicked out of Factor 7 for sharing his plans for the band to do a Yanni tribute album. Osborne joins with Tom Johnson and they form the duo “Ex Facto 7”.
5… Extracting revenge, Malcolm sneaks out in the middle of a hot June night and eats a sleeping Wookiee, leaving only a four pound hairball. Tom is upset only until he realizes there is a whole week he doesn’t have to feed Malcolm.
4.. Fed up with the way things are run in Samford’s SGA, Ty Coffey organizes a coup of the government in August, putting himself in power, with a new system of government… Ty-talitarianism. (Man, I thought this was one of the funniest things I'd ever written... no one else laughed)
3… After hearing her sing at DeuceFestDeuce, a talent scout tells Jennifer Knapp about Steph’s voice. So impressed is Jennifer that, in an effort to be more like Steph, she cuts her long hair and then drops the “K” from her name to become Jennifer Napp.
2… Playing Tetris one fateful day in July, Tommy achieves 16,428 lines in a sprint game. A mere ten seconds later, Tommy’s head blows up from overload. Michael is happy there is scotchguard on the couch to prevent stains.
1… In June, Sarah wins a million dollars in a McDonald’s contest, and we all spend a week in Tahiti.
Be a Part…
After resisting, I’ve been urged to put all call out for another haiku. We’ve done Tom, Michael, Shawn, Fisher and Malcolm… now, I guess it’s my turn. Send me your best Dave Dollar haiku and we’ll make sure it gets printed in June! Remember, a haiku is three lines, with five syllables in the first and third line, and seven in the middle line.
The First Ever DW Poll…
Response has been really good, I’m happy to say. One more week to left.. we are asking for ALL TIME FAVORITE CHRISTIAN CDs… YOUR TOP FIVE, or YOUR TOP TEN. The countdown begins in 2 weeks!

Pearl Harbor…
It’s the most anticipated movie of the summer… and we are getting a group together to go see it. The Deuce will be going as a large group on opening night, May 25th, to the late show to see Pearl Harbor at The Summit. Now, don’t be a silly goose and show up at 8 wanting to get ticket to the 9:30 show… it will be sold out. If you can bring your $7.25 during TNBS or a few days before hand (bring the amount needed, or sacrifice 75 cents, I probably wont have change) I will go during lunch on Friday and buy as many tickets as I can. First come, first serve. Please, no “get me a ticket and I’ll give you money on Friday night”. That’s why I’ve given you plenty of time to take note.
DeuceFestDeuce… 54 Days Away
It’s the biggest party you are going to find at Rollingwood Apartments on July 7th, I promise you!
Our tentative plan, depending on cost, is an all you can eat shrimp and crawfish boil. How will we do it? We aren’t sure yet, but we’ll figure that out later! Plus, in the Deuce Café, we’ll be serving up “personalized” ice cream sundaes and treats! Cost right now is a mere $5.00 at the door for all you eat, all you can handle. Tell your mama. Tell your friends. Tell anyone who can comprehend. Send it in a letter, baby tell it on the phone… if you don’t show up, I know you’ll be alone! (we’ll miss you much)
In concert: Ashley O’Neal… Justin Glenn… Stephanie Knipp… Dave the Drama Guy
and a our newest game, The Deuce Weakest Link… one prize, one winner. Can you dig it? (okay, so we didn't do the shrimp or crawfish, it was too expensive. And we didn't play Weakest Link. But darn it was a blast anyway)
The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything
5… Stefanie Jovanovich’s VW Beetle. For those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s a 1973 VW bug. It rules. (Funny--would you believe I saw her today, five years after she was mentioned here in the DW?)
4… Earl Saucer… Just a neat guy.
3… Audrey Hepburn… A real classy lady from way back when.
2… The graduating seniors. Congrats to you, welcome to the DW.
1… Superman II’s battle scene over Metropolis. It doesn’t get any finer than Superman vs. Non, Ursula and General Zod… unless, of course, it’s the Star Wars Death Star battle. (Funny--a month before Superman returns in Superman Returns. I'm prophetic)
The Spotlight Haiku
The spotlight Haiku is a feature that spotlights one person every week, someone who is loved by The Deuce. We still need more haiku for Shawn and Fisher! Come on folks, show the love!
This week’s haiku is dedicated to one of my best friends, in honor of her graduation from Alabama… we salute Amy Wible!
My friend Amy is
godly, funny… she’s awesome!
And really cute, too.
(yes, yes she was)
If I Can Be Serious for a Minute…
This Saturday, Ashley O’Neal is working at the Alabama Pro Life Coalition Yard Sale. It’s from 7am to 3pm this coming weekend. She could really use any old clothes donations, or anything in good shape you wouldn’t mind donating to be sold to help the Pro Life Coalition. Or, if you are absolutely bored this weekend, maybe you could help out! Call Ashley O’Neal at 980-1191 or 444-7784 for more details.
This Week’s Top Ten List…

Oh, FYI--this was the movie that that I learned to never say "I'll get your tickets and wait for you outside the theater...")
The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five Of Everything… PCB Edition

Her name just rolls off the lips
Say it with me: Jill!
If I Can Be Serious for a Minute…
If you missed the weekend in Florida, it was great. Lots of time of prayer and great fellowship. Thanks to everyone who came and made it what it was.
This Week’s Top Ten List…
Top Ten Things You Didn’t Hear Said This Weekend in Panama City From…
10… Josh Crosby: “I don’t have much energy right now.”
9… Michael Nipp: “I’d much rather be watching the hit motion picture Black Dog than be sitting on this beach.”
8… Wookiee: “Oh, look at those kids throwing water balloons. They are so sweet… I love children.”
7… Stephanie Campbell: “Geez, I’m almost as dark as Dave!”

June is Deuce History Month, and we are setting aside the month of June to honor Tom, Shawn, Michael, Fisher and Malcolm in a series of Haiku. Tom’s Haiku has been selected and will run the first week of June. We are still accepting all submissions for Michael, Shawn and one Haiku for Fisher and Malcolm. A Haiku is a Japanese poem with three lines… 5 syllables in the first and third line, 7 in the middle. Turn-ins have been low, so you guys need to pick it up! Put your creative gowns on and give me some haiku!

If I Could Be Serious For a Minute:
This is from Emily in Atlanta who asked me to post this, for anyone who has a heart for foreign missions:
They are in need of singles to teach k-5 school children and couples to be house parents in Indonesia. If you are interested in either thing, please [Contact DW] ..and I will send you more info about the program. It is an awesome way to be a Christian witness to the Indonesian children and families. Emily is waiting on more info on the exact dates, but I think summer help is needed as well as long term help. Both positions are salaried with full benefits. (anyone remember Emily Eldridge? She was the sorta hot chick who was friends with Amy Valdmanis, and ended up being just as good friends with us... she had the Star Wars on laserdisc that belonged to her roommate in Atlanta, which Tommy and Mikey Nipp molested when we all went to visit Emily and Steph Campbell one weekend... last I heard,m Emily was living in California, probably hiking the west coast barefoot)
This Week’s TopTen List…
(Okay, so this was one of my all time favorites, if only for the Thug Life comment, and I felt like I got crickets from the audience on this one... nary a comment, an email, or anything about it. Disappointing.)
Top Ten Things the Muppets Could Do to Appeal to Today’s Teens
10) Popular Muppet changes his name to Notorious B.I.G. Bird
9) Rumble scene with the cast of South Park where Gonzo shanks Cartman
8) Sesame Street now sponsored by the number 3 and Colt 45
7) To save hostages Miss Piggy and nephew Robin, Kermit takes to the road in a big rig, hauling illegal weapons for crime-boss Meatloaf in an epic called “Black Frog”
6) Cookie Monster writes a tell-all book about his struggles with an eating disorder
5) Bert and Ernie guest star on “Friends” in a comical love triangle with Phoebe.
4) New fuzzy purple Muppet named “Ritalin”
3) Scooter openly complains about the guy with the arm up his bum
2) Fozzie gets “Thug Life” tattoo on chest
1) Elmo is beheaded
Be a Part:
June is Deuce History Month! We are wanting to give Haiku to Tom, Shawn, Michael and the two pets, Malcolm and Fisher (as one haiku), and we want you to do it! Next Monday will be Tom’s Spotlight Haiku.
Up next is Shawn Sharp… you have until May 7th to get in Shawn’s Haiku, to be featured in the 5/14 DW. Remember, a haiku is a three line poem with five syllables in the first and third lines, and seven in the second line. Put your poetic Asian caps on, and submit your Shawn Haiku!
The Puzzler
The answer to last week’s Puzzler…
It was in the Silver Box. The fact that only one inscription can be correct means that the only one the COULD be correct is the Periwinkle inscription. If the Gold was correct, that means Silver’s was correct, and that can’t happen. That rules out all but the Silver box. So Ashley’s pic was in the Silver box, with the correct inscription being on the perwinkle. Congrats to Meredith Brazzel, who got the right answer about 15 minutes after I sent it out.
New Puzzler next week!

Ross is a Marine
Proud to be American
Has his own truck now
If I Could Be Serious For a Minute
Nathan Tutor has laid down the challenge, to Fast. This Thursday is praise and worship night, so if you feel God leading you to do so, you are invited to some sort of fasting on Thursday in prep for deep worship that night. Or, you might want to fast for the week. Talk to Nathan if you have “fasting” questions, its much deeper than giving up a meal or skipping caffeine for a day.

New Feature!
The Puzzler…
Each week, I’m going to throw out a little puzzle. Your job? Figure it out. First one to send me the correct answer wins, and the winner and answer will be announced in the next DW.
This weeks Puzzle:
Our Fair Maiden Ashley
The king wants to marry off his lovely Princess Ashley, but must find an intelligent suitor for her. Not just any cute, but stupid brute will do, he wants to find a cute, smart brute. So the king devises a test. Young Knight Michael comes in to try his hand at the hand of Ashley.
Here is the test:
On the table are three boxes, one is gold, one is silver, one is periwinkle. Inside one of these boxes is a lovely picture of our fair maiden Ashley. Knight Michael’s job, without opening the boxes, is to pick the box with her picture in it.
On top of each box is an inscription. The gold box says, "Ashley's picture is in this box." The silver box says, "Ashley's picture is not in this box." The periwinkle box says, "Ashley's picture is not in the gold box."
The King gives Knight Michael one hint, because as it stands, he can’t figure out the puzzle. The hint? Only one of the inscriptions is correct… making the other two, duh, incorrect.
So… which box would give Michael the chance to marry Ashley? That doesn’t mean he wants that one, but your job is to find the box with Ashley’s picture and why?
You get the answer next week, send all guesses to this email address or to Tanguy2001@aol.com

Easter Plans:
For those of you not sitting with family, or with no family around to sit with, here’s my preliminary plan. This is tentative, so don’t carve it in stone just yet. Meet at the Deuce at 5pm, and we can all go out to eat somewhere. We can all go to the church afterwards and sit together for the 7pm service. For those who don’t want to eat, just meet in the lobby at 6:30.
Afterwards, come back to The Deuce where we’ll have a special screening of the production “Stephen”. While not an Easter story, it is the modern retelling of the martyrdom of Stephen, and trust me, you’ll get a lot out of it.

3… Sybil Johnson. Fourteen right awards. I got ten.
2… Julia Roberts. Yeah, we knew she’d win. But it was so fun watching her smile onstage.

The Deuce Weekly, 3/13 - 3/19/01
3/13-3/19
If I Could Be Serious For A Minute:
It’s not the guns faults, its not the kids faults, you can blame Satan, but the blame falls on us. We, as Christians, aren’t doing our job we were sent here to do. If we did as we were commanded, to go tell the nations, the world still wouldn’t be perfect, but it would be closer than it is now.
DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything
5. Stephanie Campbell… her chorus of Steve Camp was simply well done and well timed. And her chicken salad junk was really good too.
4. The Deuce… yes, shameless self promotion, but we had 35 people at the Midnight Breakfast. That’s worth a number four ranking.
3. Lethal Weapon 4… Jet Li rules. I don’t care what you say.
2. Duke University… Did you see the smackdown laid upon the poor Tar Heels of North Carolina? Pretty vicious.

Subject line? "The Deuce Weekly 2/20"
And thus it began.
So here now, in its entirety, is the first ever Deuce Weekly. Any comments I have added today will be in gray, and italicized.
Welcome to The Deuce Weekly, for February 20th-25th, your guide to what’s going on in and around The Deuce, plus the latest news. (this set up and style was a "just the facts" style... it got longer, more joke filled and more controversial as time when on)
Before I begin, let me just say this:
I don’t know how hard it is making a living by making left turns all afternoon, but The Intimidator was the best at it. Loved to root against you when you lived, mourned you when you died. Rest in peace, number 3. (its weird that today, 2-19-06, was also the Daytona 500, five years to the day of Earnhardt's death)
Coming up at The Deuce:
*On March 11th, its Selection Sunday for The Big Dance. Sixty four teams will be picked to participate in the NCAA’s Men’s Basketball Tournament, also called March Madness, and we’ll be doing a tourney of our own… how good are you at picking the winners? The last day to sign up to play is 3/10… it costs nothing to play, you get no money if you win, but you do get bragging rights that you are the big dog around. (drew morris won this)
*March 25th is Oscar Night at The Deuce. I have a copy of the Oscar ballot, and can email it to you upon request, or you can go to EWonline.com and get them. Everyone picks the winners from the 23 categories, the best record gets you two free movie passes, provided by The Deuce. Our own Michael Nipp took it away last year, but this year he admits to not knowing what he’s going to do! (michael won it again)
*DeuceFestDeuce is Saturday, July 7th, mark it down, make plans for it. We’ve already got a Deuce First Lady Stephanie Nipp in her own set, Justin Glenn has agreed to do some, and after talking to my fellow Deucemates, we might have a few surprises up our sleeve. We’ll keep you posted.
Coming Soon:
*May… Murder mystery time at The Deuce. (this would have been fun)
*June 28-30… Stages: In the Round. V’dale’s WalkAbout drama team, directed by yours truly, takes the stage for our second annual dinner theater
*July… finally, the Deuce Open Invitational Nerf Golf Championships (see note on mystery dinner)
*August… So Long Steph, our salute to the departing Stephanie Nipp
*September… The Deuce Football Championships, Season II
*October 6th… Deuce Semi-Formal
*December 15th, It’s A Wonderful Deuce: The Party
The Webpage:
Shawn has been working diligently on the webpage, which is TheDeuceonline.com, and hopefully will have it up and running in March. It will feature archives of encouragement and stories, updates on new events coming up, pictures, links to other cool sites and so much more. Keep your heads up for it!
The Spotlight Haiku:
To show our appreciation to everyone around The Deuce, I bring you the first installment of our salute to you guys. This week’s Spotlight Haiku salutes Matt Latta.
Matt Latta at Lee
Lives with that Marine guy Ross
His chick Ging is hot
