The Deuce Weekly, 7/24 - 7/30

Because of my recent New York City trip (July 2006), I have fallen behind on Deuce Weekly's... I'll post three this week in order to be completely caught up for next Monday's posting (8/14)

The Deuce Weekly
Vol II, Iss X
7/24-7/30

Coming Up:

*Tuesday, July 24th... Tuesday Perk

Tuesday Perk will be as normal--a fun time to hang out, play cards, watch a movie and chill, but if you've ever wondered what your spiritual gifts are, you'll have a great chance to find out. Sean "When He Trips He's Halfway Down the" Hall will be giving a spiritual gifts test and some other fun and wacky stuff he plans at Common Ground. Come find where you belong! 7pm.

*Wednesday, July 25th... Hangin' With Miss Cooper
Women's Bible Study at Common Ground. Susan Cooper will be leading, and I've seen some of the stuff she has planned... if you are a chick, I really encourage you to check it out. I think you'll really get alot out of it! Starts at 6:30, finishes whenever. (Btw, I saw Jason Quinn the other day at The Bucks... I didn't ask him about Susan. I was too busy)

*Saturday, July 28th... Cracker Barrel Saturday
Saturday morning, at 10am, meet at the CB on 119 for a fellowship filled breakfast together! We used to do this once per month, and had to pause for June and July, but now we bring it back! FYI, its buy your own... we are all pretty broke!

*Saturday Night, July 28th... Dinner with Amy V
Amy V has invited everyone to her home for a night of fun and food and fellowship! She has asked that everyone bring a dish, and she has games and a pool and all kind of nutty, zany things planned, because you know, that Valdmanis is one wacky girl. For directions and more info, email her at
beccamos@yahoo.com. RSVP, times given on the Weekend Update this week.

*Sunday, July 29th... Raiders of the Lost Ark.
One of the great films in history, its playing on the big screen at The Alabama Theater. We'll be there! Tickets are $6, and drinks and candy are 50 cents! Lunch at the Nipps, and we'll go to the 2pm show. (Coinkydinkaly, its playing this weekend at the Alabama Theater)

*Tuesday, July 31st... Irish Leadership Dinner
Okay, so our leadership isn't Irish, but our dinner is! Make sure you contact Josh and find out what you can do to help, because we need more people! We salute the completely non-Irishian leadership we have at Common Ground, and Joshua is heading up the kitchen. Email
Josh.Crosby@wgint.com or Sybil@datacrest.com for more details... you can only come if you plan to help!

*Friday, August 3rd... Chick Night at S'Nipps
Its a Chick Night all night at the home of Steph Nipp. If you possess the ability to cry at Hope Floats, whether its just that sad or the movie just stinks, this night is for you! Steph Nipp is hosting a good ol' fashioned slumber party. This is a great way to get closer to some of the females in the group! Contact
snipp2@aol.com or mcquintana@earthlink.net for more details and directions.

*Friday, August 3rd... Men's Night at The Deuce
The same night the chicks are talking about boys and painting their toenails, the guys are invited to The Deuce for a real life guys event. Bring a couple of bucks for pizza, and we'll celebrate our wonderful, slobby habits in playing Risk, Tetris and watching lots of things blow up and lots of people get shot on tv. Man, it feels good to be a gangsta.

*Saturday, August 4th... StephStock
Our salute and goodbye to the Deuce First Lady, Stephanie Knipp. She's headed for the unknown world, aka, Carson-Newman, and we want to give her our love and appreciation. We are partying at Meredith Quintana's (like Banana!) home in Chelsea. Factor 7 is scheduled to do a mini-concert, and there will be snacks, drinks and such. Times TBA! Don't forget to RSVP and let me know if you are coming!

*Friday, August 10th... Dave's Birthday Weekend
Hey! I'm getting old! There is a group heading to Atlanta on Friday and Saturday, where we plan on having cheap fun just hanging out away from B'ham. I consider this the last big bash of the summer! We'll be staying at the new House of Emmy, bring money for food. For more info, contact me at

The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything...
...the Cool as the Other Side of the Pillow edition.
5... Sean Hall. Because he's as cool as the other side of the pillow.
4... James Halford. He too is cool as the other side of the pillow.
3... Jennifer Adams. Her hospitality is cool as the other side of the pillow.
2... Stephanie Campbell. The other side of the pillow? Her chicken salad is that cool.
1... Susan Cooper. The whole Bible study idea... Very cool... like the coolness on the pillow when you flip it to the other side.
Just Missed the Cut: Mint Chocolate Chip, America's Sweethearts, Vic Paschal, The Original Side of the Pillow and "Whatcha Doin' Wookiee?" (I think the "whatcha doin' wookiee?" has a very funny story behind it... I just can't remember what it is...)

The Spotlight Haiku
Our weekly shine to someone who we love and cherish! This week, our Haiku of spotlight and fame goes to Dr. Earl Salser!
Doctor Earl is our
group's own medicine man and
pretty witty, too.

If I Could Be Serious for a Minute...
A couple of things... this is the editorial part of the DW. Thanks to everyone for the support and love shown to be me last week in all my goof ups and flack. 'Nuff said about that.
The middle school is on a week long mission project in Chattanooga, and for some of them, this is their first mission trip of their lives. Keep them in your prayers that God may show them things they won't forget, and that the reality they see won't scare them, but will make them realize there is a whole unsaved world out there.
Also, keep the high school in your prayers as they get set to move to the new tent area... they have been coating it in prayer that it may continue to meet the needs of the high schoolers... so our prayers won't hurt the cause. Thanks.

This Week's Top Ten List
Top Ten Signs You've Written a Bad Top Ten
(as said last week, its slightly edited to remove names--even years later, after countless helpings of humble pie, but I thought it was funny still)
10... Instead of quoting scripture in the hit motion picture Black Dog, MeatLoad stops, breaks the fourth wall and says, "Dude, man... that was a bad top ten."
9... You get smacked by wives at church for including their husbands in your bad top ten.
8... Meredith gives you a stern look.
7... As a "good idea/bad idea" demonstration, someone reads James 3:5-12, and then reads your bad top ten list. (look it up... it'll make more sense)
6... God audibly says to you, "If you'd pay more attention to My top ten list, you wouldn't have this problem."
5... The teacher wraps a rock in your bad top ten list and stones you.
4... Come to Bible Study, get food. Write a bad top ten list, get rebuked.
3... Vic sits on you, muttering, "Dumb top ten list".
2... The planned Men's Fellowship includes a lesson on faith, patience and not writing a bad top ten list.
1... Sybil pays you off to never write a top ten list again.

"Supertones Strike Back" is the the Supertones signature accomplishment. Punk rock guitar riffs mixed with rap-inspired vocals and an infectious brass-driven melodies creates a hard hitting sound that uniquely characterizes the southern California vibe. Matt Morginsky delivers his message of hope and love with true passion and raw energy. "Supertones Strike Back" is a must-have for any true ska fan.

Hip Click of the Week:
Here is a site I found this morning that I thought was cool... it's
www.TheGoonies.com, and it gives a little update on the upcoming DVD (with the octopus scene added!) and the upcoming sequel... yes, a sequel, with all the original cast members.

Goob of the Week:
Your way of knowing there is always someone more goofy than you.
Forgetful thief leaves big clue
TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (somehow you knew it would be)—A suspect in a string of Mississippi bank heists left investigators a pretty big clue — his wallet, with his driver's license inside. The man had taken out his wallet and keys while in the process of obtaining a money order when he suddenly pulled a gun and threatened tellers, authorities said. In a hasty departure, he left his car keys and handgun as well as his wallet.
