*Thursday, August 23rd... Common Ground Volunteers Needed!!! Please Read This!!!
This Thursday is Samford "move-in" day, and Sybil has requested four or five of the Common Ground'ers to please go participate as our representatives. If you are working all day, its understandable, but if you are doing nothing, please call Ashley TODAY for info. This is a great way to pull in new people and to meet new faces, and a great op to share with them Common Ground, and possibly the love of Christ!

*Saturday, August 25th... Nightlife 2001 at Valleydale
An annual youth event where tons of kids are led to Christ! This yer, the concert/rally will be held at Valleydale. Sybil says we never have enough counselors for the youth that want to talk about Christ! To volunteer to help, email
Sybil@datacrest.com.

*Sunday, August 26th... Grease at The Alabama Theater
We orginally were going to go Friday, but have moved it to Sunday now. You know the songs, you know the characters, so get ready to hand jive. We'll leave the Nipps at 1:08 on Sunday, or meet us there at the Alabama Theater at 1:43 for the 2pm showtime. I've got some free passes, and already going for free is myself, Campbell, Shawn, Jason Q, Sarah, Meredith, Wookiee and the Nipps. I've got about 5 or 6 more to whomever calls them!

*Saturday, September 1st... IHOP Saturday

Our monthly tradition returns to a regular schedule! Meet this time at the IHOP on 280 at 10 am, for a breakfast all together... and after breakfast, come back to The Deuce where we'll have four televisions proudly displaying the 2001 College Football Season!!!!!!

*Saturday, September 1st... The Deuce Football Championships.
The DFC sign up is now closed. Nineteen guys and the one chick set their sights on the football season, starting September 1st. Its a game of skill, chance, luck and good guesses, all winding down to the playoffs in December. Twenty players, four divisions, two conferences, one championship plate to be held high above the winner's head. The DW editors will keep you posted on how the players are doing so you can root for your favorites! (So... now its season 7. how weird is that)

*Friday, Sept 7th-Saturday, Sept 8th... CG Campout at Oak Mountain

We are going to take a little nature night at Oak Mountian state park. The only cost to you is $10 and your parking fee. Only 30 spots available, and as of yesterday, 22 spots were still open. Sybil says you aren't reserved until you've paid! Contact
Sybil@datacrest.com for more details, or call Ashley at the church office, 991-5282. (the Ashley referred to is Ashley Dekker, back when she used to be the student ministry receptionist, before she and Kris W. Dekker left and then came back. And she's going to have another baby, I hear)

*Saturday, Sept 22nd-Sunday, Sept 23th... Welcome Back Weekend at CG
Its our annual big fall coffeehouse, this year with Al Denson in concert, plus a possible return by Derrick Harris. Thats on Saturday night, and on Sunday, a special luncheon for all the college/career ministry, with a mini concert by Al.

*Sunday, October 7th... Atlanta Bears vs. Chicago Bears at the Georgia Dome

If I Can Be Serious For A Moment...
By now, most of the Seattle mission team is back in town... Michael, Merdi, Tommy and others. By Thursday, Eric, Nathan, Sybil and the rest will have returned. Say a prayer for them some time this week, just to help them readjust to everything and help them remember what God showed them this past week. Thanks.

The Spotlight Haiku
Now comes the part of the show where we highlight one of our own who helped to make the Deuce what it is! Though she has been around in a long, long while, we have to salute one of the original Deuce Divas, Leslie Cordell:
She with the curly
hair, our Les we love so much
We miss you, Cordell!

Top Ten Christian Albums of All Time
Well, over the last 12 weeks, we have featured the top ten as voted on by you, the DW reader. So here they are, with number one as well.
10. Craig's Brother, "Homecoming"
9. Third Day, "Third Day"
8. Nichole Nordeman, "Wide Eyed"
7. Caedmon's Call, "Caedmon's Call"
6. Nichole Nordeman, "This Mystery"
5. dcTalk, "Jesus Freak"
4. OC Supertones, "The Supertones Strike Back"
3. Jars of Clay, "Jars of Clay"
2. dcTalk, "Free at Last"
Number One...
"Kansas" by Jennifer Knapp.
She was only a Christian three years and had been playing guitar about that long when she released "Kansas", her first album. Jennifer Knapp then drove deep in the hearts and spirits of so many people, young and old, girl and guy, with her folksy sound, her rock riffs and her spiritual and meaningful-to-everyday-sinner-you-and-I lyrics.
"Wanting, needing, guilty and bleeding... unrighteous, unholy, undo me, undo me..." sink deep in your mind as a prayer of sorts. "His grace is sufficient for me" is a line from the song of the same name that conjures up the thought that He truly is all we need!
"Hold Me Now" shares the story of the defense of the prostitute by Jesus, and it is really a song we can all relate too in saying "oh foot of Christ, you wait until her harlotries known" (will you still love me when you know what a crappy person I am?) and Jesus says simply "You say my bride isn't worth half the blood that I've spilled" (dont say you are worthless, because I wouldn't have died if you were).
Perhaps my favorite, yet most convicting line off the whole album, is that from "Martyrs and Thieves", a line that states "There are ghosts from my past who own more of my soul than I thought I had given away... they linger in closets and under my bed and in pictures less proudly displayed." I am actually listening that song now. When that line sings, I just cringe, yet am so proud I am set free from those things.
In writing practically all of her songs, she rises above the shallow "Jesus loves me" lyrics of similar artists, boy bands and girl groups. This is a fine pick for number one....
