Vol II, Iss IX
7/17-7/23

(Also known as "The Deuce Weekly With the Bad Top Ten")

Coming Up:
*Wednesday, July 18th... Women's Bible Study
For all the ladies in the place with style and grace... (Biggie Smalls reference) Susan Cooper has put together a woman's bible study and fellowship at Common Ground. Meet there at 7pm for womanly things, including, and I think I'm right when I say this, a study of the book of Ruth. For more info, email her at
shoppgirl129@notaworkingemail.com

*Thursday, July 19th... TNBS at Sybil's
The usual news, dinner at 6:15 this time, worship at 7pm. This week is Praise and Worship night at Bible Study... that means no lesson, just music and prayer. It will be quite awesome.

*Sunday, July 22nd... James' Baptism
At the 11 service, our friend James will be immersed as a display of his faith! Make sure you congratulate him, say a prayer and give Steph Jovi a hug.

*Sunday, July 22nd... Lunch at Jennifer Adams' House
After Church on Sunday, come join us at the home of Jennifer Adams for grilling out hot dogs, hamburgers and such. She asked that you only bring your own drink and she would take care of the rest. I'll email directions out on the Weekend Update. For more info, email her at
littleadams@notaworkingemail.com

*Sunday, July 22nd... Song of Solomon Parts 4-6
Replays of the SoS series that has been shown at Life Connection for the last little while. Starts at 8, with discussions to follow. For directions or info, email
sybil@notaworkingemail.com.

*Tuesday, July 24th... Spiritual Gifts
Ever wonder what your spiritual gifts are? I think mine are Newsletter Emails and Charm, but I'm not sure. Anyway, Sean "Too Tall" Hall will be giving a spiritual gifts test at Common Ground this night... so
come find where you belong!

*Saturday, July 28th... Cracker Barrel Saturday
Saturday morning at 10am, meet at the CB on 119 for a fellowship filled breakfast together, as we bring back this popular monthly event! FYI, its buy your own... we aren't loaded.

*Saturday, July 28th... Amy Valdmanis Dinner Party
Amy V has invited everyone to her home for a night of fun and food! She has asked that everyone bring a dish, and she has games and a pool and all kinds of wacky fun things for us to be a part of. Now that I've said this, she has to come up with wacky fun things. :)
For directions and more info, email her at
beccamos@notaworkingemail.com. RSVP.

*Sunday, July 29th... Raiders of the Lost Ark
One of the great films in history, it's playing on the big screen at The Alabama Theater. We'll be there! Tickets are $7, and we'll be going to the 2pm show after lunch at the Nipps house. More details coming soon!

*Tuesday, July 31st... Irish Dinner for the Leadership
Okay, so we are doing a dinner for the Common Ground leadership, and it has an Irish theme. Josh is doing the cooking. More info, contact
Sybil@notaworkingemail.com.

*Friday, August 3rd... The Estrogen Event of the Summer.
Its a Chick Night all night at the home of Steph Nipp. If you possess the ability to cry at Beaches, like painting your nails and think Hope Floats is a great movie (that last one will rule out any guys if the first two don't), then come to Snipps for a girls-only good ol' fashioned slumber party. RSVP, I'm guessing. Contact
mcquintana@earthlink.net or snipp2@notaworkingemail.com for more info.

*Friday, August 3rd... The Men Strike Back.
The same night the chicks are gossiping about boys and eating brownies that they will regret the next morning, the guys are coming to The Deuce for a Guys Night. Bring a couple of bucks, we'll order some pizza, play some Risk, some Tetris, and sit and wallow in our own slobby habits all night long. Rock. Feels good to be a guy. : )

*Saturday, August 4th... StephStock

Our salute and goodbye to the Deuce First Lady, Stephanie Knipp. She's headed for the world of Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, and we want to give her our love and appreciation for her! We are having a bash in the middle of cotton-pickin' nowhere Chelsea, Alabama, at Merdi Q's house.

*Friday, August 10th... Dave's Birthday Celebration
It's my birthday! There is a group of us heading to Atlanta for Friday and Saturday, where we plan on having cheap fun just hanging out away from Birmingham. I consider this the last big bash of the summer! We're staying with the wonderful Miss Emmaline in the new House of Emmy. For more info, contact me at

The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything
5... John Autry. Accomplishing what I can only dream of. Sigh. (I think this was a reference to the fact he made out with a hot chick that will go unmentioned)
4... Derrick Harris. Smooth Criminal & Ice Ice Baby on Guitar. How cool.
3... Sonic. Their cheese tots are simply de'lish. Just de'lish.
2... Jason Quinn. You ever realize what a cool guy he is? (Yes. Like the way he stole Susan Cooper from us)
1... Lynn Nipp and Leisha Hall... why Le Perk at CG looked like it did. Thank you.
Just missed the cut: Steph Nipp, Hefty Keith, Ice Daddy Coffee, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Sean Hall.

The Spotlight Haiku
Our weekly shine to someone who we love and cherish! On tap for Haiku is Earl, Jimmy, Sarah, S'Crook and more... but this week, we give the shine to Jennifer Adams: (this was when Jason Quinn and Jenn Adams were together--Quinnifer)

This Week's Top Ten List
Top Ten Ways to Improve Attendance at Sunday School

(thaaat's right... its the infamous "bad top ten" that I wrote that caused much fervor at church, and suddenly put the DW on the watchful eye of the church Powers that Be. I thought of deleting this all together, but that would be changing history, now wouldn't it? So, I removed the names, removed a few key phrases and titles, and here you go)

10... Study scripture quoted by Meatloaf in the hit motion picture Black Dog.
9... At 10:20 every Sunday morning, we lead the Sunday School Conga Line
8... To attract the urban crowd, we start calling God "Abba G. Diddy"
7... As a "Good Idea/Bad Idea" demonstration, Song of Solomon followed immediately by episodes of Sex in the City.
6... Add a commandment--"Thou shalt no go a day without an Al Denson cd."
5... Teacher stones the least popular student as an object lesson. (come on... this is funny. it just is)
4... Come to Bible study, get food. Teach Bible study, get a date with a hot blond. (and this was a John Autry/Steph Nipp reference... again, I cracked up)
3... Announce the upcoming Rub A Tummy for Free Cheese Day.
2... Leader's planned Men's Fellowship at Hooters.
1... Pay em off.

Top Ten Christian CDs of All Time...
as voted on by you, the DW audience
We enter the second half of our countdown now... here is what Justin Glenn voted as his top five: 5-Caedmon's Call, "Caedmon's Call"... 4-dcTalk, "Free at Last"... 3-Third Day, "Third Day"... 2-Jennifer Knapp, "Kansas"... and 1-Caedmon's Call, "40 Acres".
Our Countdown-
Number 10 - Craig's Brother, "Homecoming"
Number 9 - Third Day, "Third Day"
Number 8 - Nichole Nordeman, "Wide Eyed"
Number 7 - Caedmon's Call, "Caedmon's Call"
Number 6 - Nichole Nordeman, "This Mystery"
Number Five... dcTalk, "Jesus Freak"
With the release of "Free at Last", dcTalk has broken from the then-normal Christian music style that had come with the likes of their "Nu Thang", early Newsboys, and early Audio Adrenaline. They were growing as a band, and their growth had come full circle with the 1995 release of the now triple platinum "Jesus Freak".
Jesus Freak seems to be the album they had always wanted to release, and it was different than any other album they, or most, had done. Right away it grabs you and sucks you in with its infusion of rock-n-roll and takes you for a Christian Joyride over racism (Colored People), forgiveness (Between You and Me), our depravity (What If I Stumble) and of course, standing up for Him in the legendary title track, Jesus Freak.
Perhaps the greatest achievement on the cd, sometimes overlooked by radio stations and compilation discs that want to play the best music out there is the track "In the Light." One of my personal favorites of any genre of music, "In the Light" is the prayer and cry of every single one of us, from the Billy Graham to the David Dollar, that we want to be in the Light of God, away from the "disease of self, run[ning] through my blood, a cancer fatal to my soul."
dcTalk's "Jesus Freak" is an album that they will never match, not because the music may not get better, but because they will never have a breakthrough like the one in 1995.

Schlameel of the Week...
Your way of knowing that there is always someone more goofy than you.
Police fire on each other; nobody hurt
SEATTLE — Police officers in two cars fired more than 20 rounds at each other after mistaking each other's vehicles for a stolen patrol car. Nobody was hurt. A bicycle patrol officer in downtown Seattle reported seeing a stolen patrol vehicle. A police car pursued it, but lost sight of the stolen vehicle. The other police car pulled up and, mistaking it for the stolen police car, rammed it. The officers inside thought they were being attacked and started firing. Two officers in one car and one in the other fired more than 20 rounds before they discovered the error.
