The Deuce Weekly, 7/10 - 7/16/01

Vol II, Iss VIII
7/10-7/16

Just a note...
Thanks to those who helped make DeuceFestDeuce a great success, including Ken Nipp, Vic Paschel, DJ Phrenzy, Digital Lester, Drew Morris, Justin Glenn, Steph Knipp and all of our faithful friends and family. If you didnt make it, it was a great show and I would dare say you missed out on a great experience! June 2002... DeuceFestTre. (I would daresay DFD was our best DF, because DFTre was lacking, partly because of the changed location)

Coming Up:
*Tuesday, July 10th... Softball and Swim

Heardmont Park, be there by 6:30, and we'll play a few innings of ball, and then head over to Sybil's for a little cool down time in the pool. We'll probably be at Sybil's by 8:30 or so, if you want to skip softball and just meet us there for the pool party!

*Wednesday, July 11th... Song of Solomon: The Honeymoon.
Meet at Common Ground at 6:30 for the PG-13 session of our Song of Solomon series. The guys and gals are splitting up for this one, cause it may be a bit risque! But its scripture, so are we to argue? Bring $2.00 for pizza.

*Saturday, July 14th... le Perc at Common Ground.
A grand ol' coffeehouse at CG, with music, fellowship, Merdi Q's new poem, some open mic time, and more! Scheduled to appear are Derrick Harris, Mark Clement and more! $3.00 at the door for all you can drink and a free dessert. Festivities kick off around 7, and we go until at least 11. Contact
Sybil@datacrest.com for more details.

*Saturday Morning, July 28th... Return of the Cracker Barrel Saturday
A Deuce Tradition returns... meet at the Cracker Barrel on 119 at 10am for the fun and fellowship and a darn good breakfast!

*Saturday, July 28th... Amy Valdmanis' Dinner Party
Details still in the works, but Amy V has invited everyone to her home for a night of fun and food! Everyone bring a dish, as she has games, a pool and lots of stuff planned. For more info, please contact Amy at
beccamos@yahoo.com. RSVP.

*Sunday, July 29th... Raiders of the Lost Ark
One of the great films in history, its playing on the big screen at the Alabama Theater. We'll be there! Tickets are about $7.00, and we'll probably go to the afternoon show at 2pm. More details coming soon.

*Saturday, August 4th... StephStock
Our salute and goodbye to the Deuce First Lady, Stephanie Knipp. She's headed for the unknown world of Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, and we want to send her off right with a bash in a field in the middle of Chelsea, Alabama. Mark this on your calendar, and we'll give you the skinny next week.

The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything
5... Digital Lester, Justin and Steph... thanks for the music.
4... Ric Paschel, for schooling everyone 5-10 years his elder in Smash Brothers. Key moment: Tell Osborne, "Play me when you are better." (this still is a definitive comedic moment in Deuce History)
3... Sarah Hasha... our bathrooms now sparkle. We didnt even ask for it. (Did she really do this? You rule)
2... DJ Phrenzy... aka, Shawn, who kept the music spinning and brought the karaoke. You rule.
1... Ken Nipp and Wookiee... doing it My Way. (see the comment on #4)
Just missed the cut: Jodi Nelson, Ken and Vic, Anne of Avonlea, Daniel Powell (for lunch!), Kent and Suzanne Free (thanks for coming!)

The Spotlight Haiku
This was supposed to be our final Deuce Haiku, written by Vic Paschel. Unfortunately, I lost it... so we will begin our Haiku again spotlighting the people that really matter-- You guys! So, this week's Haiku goes to our friend Sean Hall...
Sean, the disciple
guy. Have you prayed today? No?
Don't tell Sean! He'll flip!

This Week's Top Ten List
Top Ten Movies About a Guy Named Earl

10... Black Dog Earl
9... Earl Force One
8... Dr. Earl, Medicine Woman (I know, its a tv show... but c'mon, its funny) (this entire list cracks me up)
7... IndEarlpendence Day
6... Earl of Green Gables
5... Earl Bud: Golden Retriever
4... Dr. Salser's Opus
3... My Best Friend Earl's Wedding
2... Earl's Dirty Dancing
1... Earl Harbor

Top Ten Christian Albums of All Time,
as voted by you, the DW audience.

We've counted the bottom five of our top ten list... the top five are coming... to review, here's what we've gotten so far:
Number Ten - Craig's Brother, "Homecoming"
Number Nine - Third Day, "Third Day"
Number Eight - Nichole Nordeman, "Wide Eyed"
Number Seven - Caedmon's Call, "Caedmon's Call"
Number Six - Nichole Nordeman, This Mystery"
Our Top Five will start next week... this week, I, Dave Dollar, take Editor's Privilege, and give you my top ten of all time:
10... Long Line of Leavers - Caedmon's Call. Their most definitive work to date.
9... Jars of Clay - Jars of Clay. Incredible style, something they will never top.
8... Rich Mullins - A Litergy, A Legacy and a Ragamuffin Band. "Here in America" is one of the most unknown treasures in all of Christian music.
7... Free at Last - dcTalk... Breakthrough album for this trio, set the stage for the Christian music surge.
6... The Great Adventure - Steven Curtis Chapman... CCM giant, and his greatest triumph.
5... Candycoatedwaterdrops - Plumb... One of the best rock albums out there, every song is rich with spirit and passion
4... This Mystery - Nichole Nordeman... Trumps her already-great first cd, with the writing that is becoming distinctly known as hers.
3... Watermark - Watermark... Nathan's music and production and wife Christy's voice and lyrical prose make for a great album of worship and love for the Father.
2... Kansas - Jennifer Knapp... Can't argue against it being number one, with songs like "Martyrs and Thieves" and "Romans"... Knapp is a powerful vocalist and guitar player, and writes all her own.
1... Jesus Freak - dcTalk
The finest and most complete Christian album out there, with everything from rock to pop to ballad-style music to accompany it. This has to be in anyone's collection that calls themselves a Christian music fan. You may not like them, but you have to appreciate what they've done for Christian music as a whole. (okay... so five years later, which is plenty of time to reflect on what has truly stood time, if I were to revisit this list, I'd remove "Long Line" and put in "40 Acres", which to me is their definitive work... I'd take out "Great Adventure" and put in SCC's "Speechless"... I'd probably drop Rich Mullins and add in somewhere Watermark's "All Things New"... I'd bump up #9 a few places for being a CD that only gets better as the years progress... perhaps I'd flip-flop #1 and #2... and I'm sure Michael would find a way to put in Phil Joel)

From Steph. . .
So, do you remember why you have Anne of Avonlea in "just missed the cut?" I kept most of those Deuce Weekly's. :)
