The Deuce Weekly, 6/5 - 6/11/01

Vol II, Iss III
6/5-6/11

(Don't just stop reading at the "removal"... below is the classic piece from Earl Salser, "Deuce Takes Broadway")

Coming Up:
*Tomorrow night, June 5… Tuesday Perk at Common Ground.
Bring extra clothes and towels… prepare to get soaking wet… its going to be nice and watery.

*Friday, June 8th… Midnight Breakfast. IT’S THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEUCE!!!! Dave the Pancake guy will be in full effect, serving up pancakes like a dream… Featuring Plain, Choco Chip and Pecan Pancakes, plus apple, blueberry, cinnamon and strawberry toppings, with whipped cream available. We’ll also have sausage and bacon available… as well as OJ, Cokes and Milk. Two bucks per person, doors open at 10:30, cakes served at 12 am. Also, be there for the Deuce Time Line, a one year retrospective on The Deuce… (actually, I think the Deuce's Anniversary was June 10th... it will be 7 years old this year.)

*Saturday, June 9th… Time TBA—watch for the Weekend Update. Ryan and Tanya Smith are moving into a new home, and they have asked for some help painting the interior. Let’s show them the housewarming gift they deserve by gathering an obnoxiously large group to go over and help out. Tanya also said she’d provide food!

*Sunday, June 10th… 9:40 Life Connection service at Valleydale. Song of Solomon, great for singles, couples and everything in between.

*Saturday, June 16th… Luau at Sybil’s house! 7 to 11, poolside games, tiki torches, shish-ka-bobs and coconut bras! Woo-hoo.

*AtlantaFest, June 20th-23rd… AtlantaFest is a huge christian music festival at Six Flags over Georgia… There is a group going at different times during the week, and we are finding lodging at The Divine Miss Em’s place (Emily Eldridge). I plan on going up on Friday, but probably will be there just to hang out in Atlanta for the weekend, so if you go, you don’t have to go to the Fest! For ticket info, see
www.atlantafest.com, for lodging info, see emeldridge@yahoo.com, for travel info, see nubjubjr@aol.com and for other info, email here.

*Friday, June 29th-Saturday, June 30th… WalkAbout: On Holy Ground Dinner Theater… besides The Deuce, Common Ground and Mariah Carey, my other obsession is with the middle school drama team I direct. This is our second annual dinner theater, and I hope to see all of you there for the show! Tickets for dinner and show are $5, the show alone is free! Dinner at 7, show at 8.

COMMON GROUND BBQ
The night of July 3rd, on into July 4th, we are calling on everyone to come help out! Common Ground is selling BBQ to pay for the mission trip to Seattle in August. The BBQ is $8 bucks a pound, and you can help by either selling tickets for BBQ bags, or by coming this night to help chop and assemble the BBQ. We need your help! Contact
Sybil@datacrest.com for more details.

The DRL (deuce request live) Top Five of Everything
5… That poor Barbie… anyone at Jodi’s pool party will know what I’m talking about. (This was a Barbie doll that somehow ended up in the pool... and in the hands of Josh Crosby. Need I say more?)
4… Cheese Fries… Lone Star’s are okay, Wings are a little better… Outback still rules the cheese fries genre.
3… Meredith Q, extracting revenge by soaking ribs in hot sauce for someone else… quite funny. (I vaguely remember this... I do remember it was darn funny, whatever it was)
2… Emily Eldridge! We miss her when she’s gone, but you know she’ll be back soon. (She's gone. Hasn't come back)
1… Jodi and her home… Thanks for opening up your house to us for the whole day!

The Spotlight Haiku
June is Deuce History Month… June 10th, as a matter of fact, is our one year anniversary! This is the third in a series of Spotlight Haiku, shining the spotlight on the residents of The Deuce. This week? Our psychotic cat Fisher has the spotlight… written by our own Michael Nipp.
We Can’t Hardly Wait
Fisher, Fisher, we love you
Shawn does more than most

If I Can Be Serious for a Minute…
By the time you read this, 80+ high schools and leaders will have been at the beach several days, and 80+ middle schoolers and leaders will be getting ready to head to the beach for camp… Pray for the believers, that they may grow stronger… pray for the non-believers, that they may hear the truth… and pray for the leaders that they may have strength, patience and compassion for God’s Word.

This Week’s Top Ten List
Top Ten Names if The Deuce Family were Star Wars Characters (man, this was funny to me)

7… Boba Nipp
6… sHan Sharpo
5… Queen Amidavidmarka
4… Wookiee… wait, that’s his real name

The Top Ten Christian Albums of All Time, as voted by DW Readers
Our poll is complete, and over the next ten weeks, we’ll be giving you the top ten favorites of the readers of the Deuce Weekly….
Hillary Kelly’s favorites? 5) Nichole Nordeman’s This Mystery; 4) Point of Grace’s The Whole Truth; 3) Watermark’s Debut cd; 2) Jennifer Knapp’s Kansas; and 1) Nichole Nordeman’s Wide Eyed.

Number Ten on the DW List:
Craig’s Brother, “Homecoming”.

Says DW Reader David Mark Osborne: "Homecoming is an incredible CD because it steps outside of the jarring, rebellious, and sometimes even shallow world of punk rock to create a masterpiece of insightful lyrics, tight, powerful vocal harmony, and energetic story telling. Inspiring melodies soar over rapid guitar licks and furious drum beats to create a barrage of sound that takes the listener deep into the emotions of the singer. It may be one of the greatest punk rock accomplishments ever." (I'll admit this much... #s 10 thru like, 8 didn't get a lot of votes. I think this cd got maybe 3? It was the top 7, especially the top 5 that racked up the votes... I still haven't a clue who Craig or his Brother is)

DW Special:
by DW correspondent Earl Salser
The Deuce has taken over Broadway… here are a few of the new shows appearing recently:

Deuc-I-cal The Musical
The original and best according to most critics. Seven years and running, this excellent production tells the story of how the original four Deucesters met and transformed a humble apartment into a phenom known as The Deuce. Lyric Theater. Available. (I love how on each one, Earl puts the theater, and how hard the tickets are to get... just hysterical)

The Pro-Deucers
Currently up for eleven Tony awards, including Ty Coffey for best supporting actor, the continuing adventures of the Deuce which introduces many of the current supporters of the Deuce way of life. The Orpheum. Difficult.

Les Deucerables
The tragic tale of what happens when four Tetris addicts battle a sleepy Wookiee for the couch. Includes Drew Morris singing "Tetr-cide", and the famous "Do You Hear the Wookiee Scream?". Broadway Theatre. Available. (This is my favorite one... the "Do You Hear the Wookiee Scream?" joke is one of the top 20 funniest things I've ever heard)

Cats II: The Fisher King
Continuing the success of the "Deuce" musicals storming Broadway over the past few years, this darker one deals with "Fisher", the cat of the Deuce household, and how she uses microtransmitters to control the brain of Malcolm. Special appearance this month only by DJ Frenzy. The Oberon Theatre. Available.

Miss Deuc-gone
The newest of the Deuce musicals, still in preproduction but opening in August, the true story of Steph Nipp, first lady of the Deuce, and her adventures in the strange land of Carson-Newman. Opens at the Disney/ MGM theatre in August. Difficult.

The Deuce' s Tommy
Not to be confused with The Who's Tommy, this tells the story of a satellite Deucester, Tommy McLeod, and how he develops a way to play computer games with a trombone slide. The Scrushy. Difficult.

Hope you get to catch some of these shows.

Thanks to Earl for that stirring piece of art culture… have a great week, catch you guys in the update!

So, the hot sauce story with Mer. We all know and love Mer for her sweet nature. This night, she showed us another side. We'd all gone to Jim N Nick's for BBQ after the Common Ground softball night. Something got started between her and some other person, and when that person walked away, she put Hot Sauce on his (her?) ribs. I can't remember who the person was!! But, we all rolled as the person at the ribs and about died from the hot sauce. Mer threw out some "saucy" line, and all of a sudden, we had a new view on the Meredith we all know and love. :)
